ICICI Bank’s first Chinese branch inaugurated in Shanghai
ICICI Bank’s first branch in China was inaugurated in Shanghai, a major global financial hub. It was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the presence of ICICI Bank’s MD and CEO Chanda Kochhar. The new branch will begin its operation with 17 banking professionals handling different functions including finance, operations, corporate banking and treasury. Apart from it, this branch will also play important role in the growing trade and investment opportunity between India and China. It should be noted that ICICI Bank’s Shanghai Branch had received the formal regulatory approval in March 2015 to commence operations. Currently ICICI Bank is India’s biggest private sector lender with a total consolidated asset base of US $ 132 billion and has presence in 17 countries.  Earlier in 2003, ICICI Bank had opened a representative office in China.

UN adopts resolution to strengthen relief efforts in earthquake hit Nepal
United Nations (UN) has adopted a resolution in order to call attention of international community to urgently assist Nepal and help rebuild the country after it was hit by devastating earthquake. The resolution was led by India and was co-sponsored by 65 other nations including Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Australia, Japan, China, Germany, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan UK and the US. It was adopted by consensus at the United Nations during a special 193-member General Assembly session. In the resolution UN has appealed to help raise US $ 423 million over the next three months in order to meet essential needs of Nepal earthquake survivors. The relief funds collected help rebuild the country and support the victims of the massive 7.8 magnitude quake that had struck Nepal on 25 April 2015 in which more than 8,200 people died.

6th edition of National Conference on Nuclear Energy held in New Delhi
Sixth edition of National Conference on Nuclear Energy held in New Delhi. The theme of this edition was Nuclear Energy: a Clean Energy option. It was organized by Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM), one of the apex trade associations of India. The conference discussed the issue related to the status of Nuclear Energy in India. Apart from it various issues were also discussed including on nuclear energy to the decarbonisation of power sector, Climate change & the future of nuclear energy, nuclear energy expansion & Make in India.

Arun Shrivastava assumed charge as Managing Director & CEO of Syndicate Bank. He was Executive Director of Bank of India, looking after Finance, Strategy & Planning, Large Corporate & Mid Corporate Business, Corporate Debt Restructuring, Project Finance & Syndication, Credit Monitoring & Asset Recovery, Publicity & Public Relations portfolios of the bank. Earlier, Shrivastava was overseeing the foreign subsidiaries – BoI Indonesia and Botswana and joint venture – India Zambia Bank. He is a Certified Associate of Indian Institute of Bankers and AIBM. He started his career as direct recruit officer in Bank of Baroda in 1979.

Punjab becomes first state to issue Soil Health Cards to farmers
Punjab has become the first state in India to issue Soil Health Cards (SHCs), a Union Government initiative to all farmers in the state. In this regard, every district of state has been assigned mobile soil testing lab. These labs will take soil sample from every farm and issue a digitalised soil health details. Presently, state government has 66 such laboratories and has capability to test 3.5 lakh soil samples annually. State government also has made mandatory for these labs to check soil health on quarterly basis.
Importance of SHC in Punjab
The advent of green revolution in Punjab has made soil testing more necessary in view of over exploitation of soil.
It will help farmers in maintaining the balanced health structure of the soil and educate them to use right quantity of fertilisers in order to prevent soil from becoming arid.

Lok Sabha passes Negotiable Instruments (Amendment) Bill, 2015
Lok Sabha on 13 May 2015 passed The Negotiable Instruments (Amendment) Bill, 2015 by a voice vote. The Bills amends the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881 in order to make cheque-bounce filing of cases more convenient for check payees (person who receives the cheque).
Key facts
The bill adds provision to specify the territorial jurisdiction of the courts in cases related to bouncing of cheques which was not present in the parent Act.
It says that cases in this regard need to be filed only in a court in whose jurisdiction the bank branch of the payee lies.
It also adds provision related to more than one case is filed against the same person before different courts for bouncing of cheques. In this matter, the case will be transferred to the court that has appropriate jurisdiction.
The bill also amends the definition of cheque. Now it defines it as cheque in the electronic form which is signed in a secure system with a digital signature or using electronic system and drawn in electronic medium using any computer resource.

Union Cabinet gives nod to Benami Transactions (Prohibition) (Amendment) Bill, 2015
Union Cabinet has given its approval to Benami Transactions (Prohibition) (Amendment) Bill, 2015. The Bill seeks to amend the Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Act, 1988 by adding additional provisions that provides for stringent measures against violators in order to curb and check the generation of black money in the country. It also adds provisions for attachment and confiscation of benami properties and imposes fine with imprisonment. The Bill also has provision for prosecution and aims to act as a major avenue for blocking benami property, which leads to generation and holding of black money especially in real estate. Earlier in 2011, then ruling UPA-II government had introduced Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Bill, 2011, which had proposed replacing the 1988 parent Act. But, the bill was not able to pass in Parliament and had lapsed with the dissolution of 15th Lok Sabha.

Union Cabinet gives nod to 5% disinvestment in NTPC & 10% in Indian Oil Corporation
Union Cabinet gave its approval to 5 per cent disinvestment in National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC) and 10 per cent in Indian Oil Corporation (IOC). Decision in this regard was taken by Union Cabinet Meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. These approvals are part of Union Government’s budgeted target to raise 41,000 crore rupees through strategic stake sales i.e. disinvestment for the current financial year 2015-16. Disinvestment in both Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPSU) may fetch the government over 13,000 crore rupees at current market price. The proposed share sale of 5 per cent in NTPC will fetch Union government 5,565 crore rupees while that of 10 per cent in IOC will bring in 7,932 crore rupees. Currently, Union government holds 74.96 per cent in NTPC and 68.57 per cent in IOC.

Daniel Mookhey, first Indian-origin lawmaker in Australia to take oath on the Gita
Daniel Mookhey has become first Indian-origin Member of Parliament (MP) from the Australian state of New South Wales to be sworn in to Australian parliament on the Hindu religious text, the Bhagavadgita. Recently, he was chosen by the Australian Labour Party to fill the casual vacancy in the New South Wales upper house. Thus, making him state’s first politician of Indian background. Daniel Mookhey was born in Blacktown suburb in New South Wales to Indian parents who had migrated to Australia from Punjab in 1973. He holds three university degrees and currently is working as a consultant to unions, charities and community groups.

Deepak Iyer appointed as CEO and MD of Bharti AXA General Insurance
Deepak Iyer was appointed as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director (MD) of Bharti AXA General Insurance. Iyer will  take charge from Interim CEO and MD Milind Chalisgaonkar and join the board of company by end of June 2015. Presently, he is working as the MD-Indian subcontinent at Wrigley India, a subsidiary of the US-based Mars. Iyer has rich and diverse experience of 22 years across various aspects of management, sales, P&L management, marketing, research and development, operational turnaround and franchise management across different countries. Earlier, he had worked with PepsiCo for 16 years handling multiple international assignments, including in Africa, North & East India (including Nepal, Bangladesh, & Sri Lanka) and Director-Sales for Modern Trade/ Leisure/ Food service/Travel & Transport channels of the company.

UP Government launches Samajwadi water ATM scheme
Uttar Pradesh Government has launched Samajwadi water ATM scheme at bus stations. The scheme was launched by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav. It seeks to provide potable water to bus passengers at reasonable price. In this regard, state government will install water ATMs at most of the bus stations which will provide potable water at the rate of 1 rupee per litre and cold water at 2 rupees per litre. Apart from this scheme, state government also lauched affordable ‘Lohia gramin bus seva’, with 25 per cent lower bus fares. This scheme will provide connectivity at affordable fare between cities and rural areas where there was no means of public transport is available. 149 self-operating inquiry services, super luxury air-conditioned bus service were also launched by the state government.

Justice Cyriac Joseph appointed as NHRC acting chief
President Pranab Mukherjee has appointed Justice Cyriac Joseph as acting Chairman of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). His appointment comes after then Chairman of NHRC Justice K.G. Balakrishnan completed his tenure. Presently, Justice Cyriac Joseph is member of NHRC. He hails from Kaiphuza village of Kottayam district in Kerala and was a Judge of the Supreme Court from 2008 to 2012.  Justice Balakrishnan, the former Chief Justice of India, completed his tenure as the sixth and the longest serving NHRC Chairperson. During his tenure, he was instrumental in charting out several new initiatives towards promotion and protection of human rights in the country.

Canara Bank launches mega CASA
Canara Bank has launched a mega CASA (current account, savings account) campaign in Bengaluru with the CanBank men and women with their logo colour caps flooding the nook and corners of the city to sell their products. Executive directors P S Rawat and Harideesh Kumar spearheaded the campaign. The entire city was divided into 16 clusters covering 173 branches. Each cluster was led by the rank of a General Manager from head office.

KV Kamath named as first President of New Development Bank of BRICS nations
Eminent banker Kundapur Vaman Kamath was appointed as first President New Development Bank (NDB) of BRICS nations. He will have of five year term after the bank becomes operational within one year.  Kamath is the Chairman of the India’s largest private sector bank, Industrial Credit and Investment Corporation of India (ICICI). He was ICICI Bank’s managing director and CEO from 1996 to 2009. Kamath also had served as Chairman of India’s second-largest Indian IT services company, Infosys Limited. He had taken charge from N R Narayana Murthy.   

Dedicated E-Commerce Centre of India Posts launched in New Delhi
Dedicated E-Commerce Centre of India Posts, a government-operated postal system was launched in New Delhi to cater the e-commerce business enterprises. It was launched by Union Communication and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad at Safdarjang, New Delhi. This project is implemented by Department of Posts, through Delhi Postal Circle. This processing centre will exclusively handle all the e-commerce business and play a crucial role in India’s e-business which has grown up to 70 thousand crore rupees in past few years. It is capable of handling 30000 parcels (articles) per day. It will also facilitate to collection of parcels from the e-commerce customers by processing and dispatching them within 24 hours to respective destination. For this purpose the centre will use quickest available transportation facility like flight or trains. The leading e-commerce customers, Yepme, Amazon, Snapdeal, Paytm etc are using this newly established e-commerce Centre for processing of their e-commerce parcels.

MIDC inks MoU with SIDBI to raise Rs 200-crore fund for MSMEs
Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) has inked memorandum of understanding (MoU) with state-run Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) to provide easy finance to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) for their growth. The MoU was signed Ananta P Sarma, MD and CEO of SIDBI and MIDC CEO Bhushan Gagrani in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadanvis in Nashik, Maharashtra. As per the MoU, both signatory parties have jointly created funds to the tune of 200 crore rupees to provide immediate finance to the MSMEs. Of the total amount, the MIDC has contributed 75 crore rupees, while SIDBI has provided the remaining 125 crore rupees. This jointly created fund will provide easy loan to MSMEs for their expansion, product development and other business purposes.  The rate of interest at which this easy finance will be provided to the MSMEs has not been decided yet.

Lok Sabha passes Undisclosed Foreign Income and Assets (Imposition of Tax) Bill, 2015
Lok Sabha passed Undisclosed Foreign Income and Assets (Imposition of Tax) Bill, 2015 by a voice vote. The bill seeks to deal with the menace of black money and to replace the Income Tax (IT) Act, 1961 for the taxation of foreign income.
Salient features of the Bill
Scope- Provisions will applicable to both undisclosed foreign income and assets including financial interest in any entity and the Act will be applicable to all persons resident in India.
Rate of tax– A flat rate of 30 percent tax will be applied to undisclosed foreign income or assets. In case of any carried forward losses, no exemption or deduction or set off will be allowed which may be admissible under the existing IT Act, 1961.
Penalties- Violation will entail stringent penalties. Following are penalties mentioned
For nondisclosure of foreign income or assets outside India, penalty will be equal to three times the amount of tax payable i.e. 90 percent of the undisclosed income in addition to tax payable at 30%.
In case of failure to furnish return in respect to foreign income or assets, there will be of 10 lakh rupees.
